The Brian Todd Memorial Community Fund’s Board of Directors demonstrated what it means to GIVE LOCAL.

In front of a large crowd at Trinity-St. Andrews United Church Hall, the BTMCF Board awarded 25th anniversary grants of $2,500 each to many of Brighton’s good works organizations.

“These organizations rely on volunteers – 603 of them – to do their important work,” said Judie Mortlock, BTMCF Chair. “We want to thank them for their devotion of time and resources used in providing essential services for our residents.”

Grants were also awarded under the annual School Grants Program. Each of the three elementary schools – Brighton PS, Smithfield PS, and Spring Valley PS ($2,500 each) and ENSS ($5,000) – will use their grant to purchase athletic, musical, and computer equipment.

Brighton Masonic Legacy bursaries of $2,500 each were also awarded to ENSS graduates Natalie Baynes and Addison Bucci who will be attending universities in the fall.

The Board also presented the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation with a grant of $25,000 to support the purchase of a procedure bed. “ $2,500 doesn’t go too far when purchasing medical equipment, so we decided to add a zero! ”

But the biggest surprise of all was the announcement of a further $75,000 to the TMH Foundation in recognition of Trenton Hospital’s 75th anniversary. “We are so fortunate to have Trenton Memorial Hospital in our backyard”, said Mortlock. “It has been providing important and much needed clinical and emergency care to Brighton residents for generations.”

A surprised Lindsay Butcher-Dodds, TMHF’s Executive Director expressed her gratitude in saying “We are truly surprised by your incredible donation and honoured to be part of your 25th Anniversary celebration. Your support of a new procedure bed will benefit countless surgical patients, while the additional $75,000 will go directly toward enhancing patient care and supporting healthcare needs throughout our community. It was especially meaningful that, as you celebrated 25 years of making a difference, you chose to recognize Trenton Memorial Hospital’s 75 years of caring for our community. Together, we share a commitment to keeping care close to home for local families.”

But there was more to celebrate:

The BTMCF’s Board of Directors announced the return of the Student Banner Program. This year the theme is ‘Bloom in Brighton’. Many of the banners have recently been installed on downtown lampposts, with more to come, and similarly-themed collage panels will soon be installed in Casey’s Lane.

This year, we have had the artwork of 100 elementary school students printed on “postcards” which will soon be distributed throughout town – watch for a blitz giveaway at the upcoming 100th Anniversary Garden Club Event on June 14th in Memorial Park. Parents (and grandparents) will have the opportunity to receive copies of their child’s art for free!

The BTMCF Board of Directors officially handed over the keys for the hops barn to the Municipality of Brighton. After close to two years of disassembling, moving and reassembling, the barn has been successfully relocated from its former Memory Junction Museum location to the playing fields of Codrington. BTMCF Directors are confident that, under the Municipality’s stewardship, this barn will quickly become a venue for many and assorted social activities, all the while preserving this important part of Brighton’s early agricultural history.

Exciting times indeed!

To emphasize the importance of supporting the good works of local charities, a booklet entitled “GIVE LOCAL – A Donor’s Guide to Giving “ was produced and distributed to over 5,000 Brighton households. If you did not receive one, copies are available in the Municipal Building lobby, Lighthouse Books, Lola’s Café and Northumberland Fine Foods. Our Facebook page featured a “21 Reasons to Give Local” series to compliment this booklet.
